Award-winning theatre – Made in Brum!

Press Release Immediate               Friday, 24 July 2009.

Be the next Andrew Lloyd Webber?

Maverick announce a new workshop 'An Introduction to Creative Theatre Producing'.   Birmingham Rep and the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, London.

There is plenty of training available for actors, directors and technicians in theatre.  But virtually nothing for producers, who create most of the work.  Until now.  The award-winning Maverick present these unique seminars to look at everything needed to put on a show or start a production or theatre company, from the local pub to the West End of London.  Finance, the law, choice of plays or musicals, copyright, contracts, fundraising, investing in theatre, parties and pitfalls!   Led by Nick Hennegan, Maverick's Artistic Director and Creative Producer of Nicholas Hennegan Limited.  Nick set up Maverick in 1994, was selected to attend the S.O.L.T.  (Society Of London Theatre) Commercial Producers Workshop and the T.M.A. (Theatrical Management Association) 'Taking Steps' National Touring Seminar, has produced over 60 events and productions in the UK and abroad and is just finishing a Master of Arts in Creative Producing and Live Events at Birkbeck College, University of London.

“I found it incredibly difficult to get basic information as a producer when I started”, said Nick.  “I’m really a writer and director and like most producers I slipped into the role.  This workshop would have saved me a fortune and about five years of my time!”

Courses are planned for Birmingham, Manchester, London, Liverpool and Leeds and cost £79 including documentation and refreshments. Places are limited and allocated on a first come, first served basis.
Birmingham Rep Theatre 19th September, 2009.

Press Release Immediate                               11 February 2009.

Theatre Artistic Director goes commercial to beat the
recession and Funding Gap.

Nick Hennegan, Artistic Director of the not-for-profit Maverick Theatre Company
in Birmingham, has established a commercial production company to help
subsidise Maverickʼs award-winning work.

“Funding is becoming increasingly difficult to find,” said Nick, who co-founded
Maverick in 1994. “Some of the new plays we presented at the Billesley Pub in
Birmingham were so successful critically and with audiences that we believe they
will stand on their own in the commercial sector. Being a small company in
Birmingham itʼs difficult to attract the attention of the commercial, mainly London
based managements, so Iʼve been working for two years to acquire the skills to be
our own management.”

The new company, to be called Nicholas Hennegan Limited, is based in London
and already has its first project, a planned large-scale national tour of a play called
ʻHancockʼs Finest Hourʼ about the Birmingham born comedian Tony Hancock. It is
arranging an event in London next month to attract private investors, or ʻangelsʼ as
they are known.

“Itʼs an unusual step for an Artistic Director to take,” said Maverick Administrator
Deborah Scattergood, “ but we are fortunate to have someone like Nick who has
the production management experience to carry this dual role off.”

“Itʼs why we called the company Maverick,” said Nick. “ Weʼve never really been
conventional.  Fortunately Iʼve experience of large-scale commercial events from
my pre-Maverick days and Iʼve already been approached by a couple of potential
investors. Itʼs very exciting.”

PRESS RELEASE IMMEDIATE                                                26 June, 2007.

MAVERICK’S NEW MOONEY!

Birmingham theatre company recruits first ever Administrator.

The Maverick Theatre Company has recruited its first administrator, 27 year old Deborah Mooney. An arts graduate from Birkenhead, Debbie has been a fan of Maverick’s work for some years.

“I first noticed Maverick when I was studying Drama at Loughborough University”, said Deborah. “The work they were doing for new audiences in a pub on a council estate was very unusual and I actually first e-mailed them about five years ago.  My persistence has eventually paid off!”

Deborah, who lives in Northfield, is also involved in amateur dramatics with the Moorpool Players but has no intention of giving that up.

“It all comes under the banner of theatre, which I love. Am dram is a hobby but a great release. I’m only part time with Maverick at the moment but it’s a real learning curve and already it’s very demanding.  The am dram will allow me to chill out!”

Nick Hennegan, co-founder of Maverick and its Artistic Director and Producer said, “This is a big step for us, taken with the help and advice of the Arts Council West Midlands.  We advertised nationally for our first administrator and although we had a lot of interest from all over the country – and indeed, even one application from the USA - it turned our the perfect person was just down the road!  Debbie’s appointment is really more than just an administrator.  We selected her for her passion and intelligence.  She will be a major element in the development of Maverick. I’ve set an ambitious new agenda and Debs is exactly the right person to help us deliver that.”

Birmingham based Theatre Company returns to their roots with a national tour of acclaimed, one-person Shakespeare.

THE AWARD-WINNING MAVERICK THEATRE COMPANY, launched by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham in 1994, is to undertake their first ever national tour this autumn.

Henry V – Lion of England is a remarkable one-person version of Shakespeare’s classic that attracted rave reviews when it appeared in Edinburgh, Birmingham, Stratford-upon-Avon and the USA.

It was written by NICK HENNEGAN, Maverick’s Artistic Director, in 1992.

“Although there’s only one performer, it’s a very technical show, with a brilliant live music score by Robb Williams and some complicated special effects,” said Nick.  “Fortunately,  audiences have raved about the show and you really do believe one person is fighting the Battle of Agincourt! And the theme is still Shakespeare’s.  It looks at war and the reasons for going to war and how relevant is that still nowadays!”

“Nick and Robb have crafted a fine and exciting show,” said Production Manager, JOHN SLATER. “It’s a great introduction to Shakespeare and deserves to be seen by a wider audience.”

The production is booking now at theatres throughout the UK. But true to the Pub Theatre Company’s roots, it may premiere at a Birmingham Pub!

Further details can be found at the new Maverick website, www.mavericktheatre.co.uk.
